EXPLANATION TEXT

Explanation Text is a text that is used to explain the way or process of something happening, especially those related to natural phenomena, the scientific world or the socio-cultural world.

An explanation is written to explain how and why something in the world happens. It is about actions rather than about things. Explanation text serves to explain the process and causes of an event or thing in detail. An explanation text usually comes from questions related to why and how to an existing phenomenon.

It can be concluded that the purpose of Explanation Text is to explain the processes that occur in the formation of something or activities related to natural, social, scientific, cultural, and other phenomena that aim to explain why and how this can happen.

 

Text structure / Generic Structure an explanation text consists of:

1. General Statement,

2. Sequenced Explanation,

3. Closing or Concluding Statement

 

Elements of Language

- Adverb first, then, following, finally

- Cause-and-effect relationship (if –then, so, as a consequence, since, due to, because of, thanks to)

- Passive sentences, in present tenses

- Speech, word stress, intonation, spelling, punctuation and handwriting

 

Rules for changing Active Voice to Passive one:

a) Identify the Subject, the Verb and the Object

b) Change the subject into Subject

c) Put the suitable helping verb or auxiliary verb. In case the helping verb is given, use the same verb but note that the helping verb given agrees with the Object.

d) Change the Verb into the past participle form

e) Add the preposition by

f) Change the Subject into Object

 

Examples:

a) A letter is written by me.

b) American was discovered by Columbus

c) Macbeth was written by Shakespeare

d) The door was opened by his son

e) The new ideas were suggested by Edo

CONCLUSION

The conclusion is that explanation text is a type of English text that contains about how or why something happened. Generally, this type of text describes the process of something happening. The things described in the explanatory text are natural and social phenomena.
