General
Statement |
Biodiesel is a clean burning substitute for petroleum based
diesel fuel. Biodiesel is made of vegetable oil |
|
Sequenced
Explanation |
To make or manufacture Biodiesel, you must first start with raw materials.
The raw materials needed in the production of Biodiesel are a small
amount of methanol and a ready supply of vegetable product. One of the
most common vegetables used in the production of Biodiesel is corn,
although depending on the geographic location of the manufacturing
facility many other plants are used as well (rapeseed, soybeans,
flaxseed, etc.). The first step is to use the raw vegetable product to
make vegetable oil. Vegetable oil by itself will not be what you need
to power a car, from here it has to be processed into Biodiesel. |
|
Sequenced
Explanation |
The process for converting vegetable oil into Biodiesel is
sometimes called ester interchange. To complete this process the
vegetable oil has to be combined with a smaller amount of methanol and
then put in the presence of a small quantity of an alkaline catalyst
(for example, 5% to 1% sodium hydroxide). Vegetable oil is made up of
so-called triglycerides, which is a compound of the trivalent alcohol
glycerin with three fatty acids. The goal of ester interchange is to
separate the glycerin molecule from the three fatty acids and replace
it with three methanol molecules |
|
Closing |
This process then yields roughly 90% Biodiesel and 10% of a
glycerin byproduct. The glycerin byproduct can be used in a number of
other chemical processes for different industries. |

How Do Rainbows Form
Rainbow is a natural phenomenon which is an optical process. The process of formation of the sun involves three stages, namely reflection, dispersion, and refraction.
The first process is reflection. Water droplets in the air can act like small mirrors. When sunlight shines on water droplets, most of the light will be reflected back. When it rains, the air will contain lots of water droplets that form like a curtain and each of these tiny water droplets will reflect back the incoming sunlight.
Light dispersion is the phenomenon of the dissolution of light. Sunlight looks white. When sunlight hits and is reflected by water droplets, the light will be dispersed and widened so that the colors in the rainbow appear.
The third process is the refraction of light. When sunlight penetrates water droplets and is reflected in slightly different directions. Each color will refract in a different direction. This difference in the direction of light is influenced by each wavelength of each light. This is what causes the rainbow light to spread out and widen like a fan.
The process of refraction of light is what makes the colors of the rainbow order from red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple.
A rainbow is shaped like a curve because we only see a half circle of light reflected by the water droplets. The midpoint of the rainbow circle is called the antisolar point which is the point directly opposite the sun.
The rainbow looks only like a half circle because the other half circle of light has hit the ground so it looks like there is no rainbow.
