CAPTION TEXT


DEFINITION
Caption text is a short text above or below an image in a book, magazine, or newspaper that describes the image or explains what the person in it did or said. Text captions in addition to images are also used to describe graphics.


FUNCTION
Caption text has a function, namely to describe, comment on pictures, photos, tables, graphs, charts


TEXT STRUCTURE
May include:
- Actions/events/activities
- People/things involved
- Scope of the situation

LINGUISTIC ELEMENTS
- Nominal phrases for things, people, animals, locations, etc. the focus, with or without a, the, this, those, my, their, etc.
- Verbal phrases related to pictures/photos/tables/graphics in the appropriate tense for speech, word stress, intonation, spelling, punctuation, and handwriting


 TIPS TO WRITE CAPTIONS
• Do not begin with the words a, an, or the
• Use present tense to describe action in a photo
• Give readers information they cannot get from just looking at a photo
• A caption should complete the photo. The reader should not have to look at the story, but should want to look at the story
• Write captions so they go from specific to general or general to specific
• Don't begin a caption with names
• When identifying members of a group, write “from left,” not “from left to right”
• “Above” and “pictured here” are unnecessary
• Captions should not repeat information contained in the lead
• Name people only if they are important to the picture


CONCLUSION
The conclusion is that the short text is useful for describing what is in the picture. Captions are usually also used to emphasize the content of an article, essay or report. And in writing captions, it is very important to choose words that can make the reader interested in seeing the content of the article, essay or report.
